Småland is often called the land of a thousand lakes. And once you arrive here, you quickly understand why. Surrounded by forests, lakes, quiet country roads and traditional red cottages, this part of southern Sweden is a wonderful place to slow down, breathe in the fresh air and explore the outdoors. At Ljusgården, near Ydrefors and Vimmerby, nature is never far away. In fact, there are four lakes within easy reach of our holiday home, including one that is rather well hidden. Whether you enjoy walking, cycling, mountain biking or simply discovering beautiful places along the way, there is plenty to explore.

Walking around Ydrefors and its beautiful lake

One of our favourite ways to experience the area is simply to put on your walking shoes and head out. Ydrefors and the surrounding countryside offer lovely opportunities for walks, with peaceful forest roads, beautiful lake views and the typical Småland landscape along the way. A walk around the lake is a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon. Enjoy the quiet surroundings, listen to the birds and take your time. This is Sweden at its most peaceful. And perhaps you will discover a favourite little spot of your own along the way.

Hiking in Norra Kvill National Park

If you love being surrounded by nature, a visit to Norra Kvill National Park is an absolute must. This beautiful national park is home to ancient pine trees, moss-covered rocks, fallen trees and mysterious little forest lakes. Walking here feels like stepping into another world. There are marked hiking trails through the forest, with different routes to choose from. The more adventurous hike takes you up to Idhöjden, where you are rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view over the surrounding forests. It is a little climb, but the view is worth every step. Norra Kvill is a wonderful place for anyone who enjoys hiking, photography and discovering the quieter side of Sweden.

A thousand lakes , and four right around Ljusgården

Småland is known as the land of a thousand lakes, and the landscape around Ljusgården is a perfect example. There are four lakes close to our holiday home, each with its own character. Some are easy to find, while another is tucked away so well that you might almost miss it. Whether you enjoy a peaceful walk by the water, a refreshing swim or simply sitting down to enjoy the view, there is always another lake to discover. Sometimes the best places are the ones you stumble upon without looking for them.

A day in Vimmerby: fika, shopping and Astrid Lindgren

Just a short drive from Ljusgården lies Vimmerby, a charming Swedish town with a lovely centre. Spend a relaxed afternoon browsing the shops, enjoying a traditional Swedish fika at a café or simply wandering through the streets. Vimmerby is also the hometown of the beloved Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. And who doesn’t know Pippi Longstocking? Families with children will love visiting Astrid Lindgrens Värld, where the stories and characters from Astrid Lindgren’s books come to life through performances and beautifully recreated settings. It is a wonderful day out for young and old alike.

Mountain biking in and around Vimmerby

Fancy something a little more adventurous? Vimmerby has dedicated mountain bike trails at Wimer Bike Park, with different routes for different levels of experience. From easier flowing trails to more technical sections, there is something for riders who enjoy a bit of a challenge. And you don’t have to travel far to get on your bike. Around Ljusgården, the forest roads and tracks offer plenty of opportunities to explore on two wheels. Just head into the forest and see where the trails take you.

Gravel cycling: discover Småland on two wheels

Småland is a wonderful destination for gravel cycling. The landscape is crossed by countless quiet gravel roads, winding through forests, past lakes, traditional farms and open countryside. These roads are one of the things we love most about cycling here. There is something special about riding along a quiet forest road, not knowing exactly what you will discover around the next corner. I enjoy exploring the area on my own gravel bike, and we are also working on putting together our own cycling routes around Ljusgården. Our aim is to help guests discover some of the beautiful roads and hidden corners that make this part of Småland so special. Whether you are an experienced gravel cyclist or simply enjoy a leisurely bike ride, there is plenty of space to explore.

After a day spent outdoors, there is nothing better than returning to a peaceful place where you can relax. At Villa Ljusgården, you can enjoy a cosy evening, light the wood stove, prepare a nice meal or simply unwind after a day of exploring.
